I UNDERSTAND

The wet road glistened and sparkled in the cold night air, Cecil looked appraisingly at it and snorted, his breath hanging suspended. A crowd of lads milled around wiping saddles, adjusting helmets, or fiddling with the bikes.

Slowly the machines were started up. Cecil went and joined Gurn and Pete who were sitting on the steel encasement of the Bridge "Did you hear about GR and his new girl?"

Pete wasn't really interested, but he didn't want to be impolite, particularly as Cecil had a full packet of baccy in his hands "No. Why?"

"They've got engaged."

Gurn stopped watching the preparation for the race and turned to the other two "You realise what this means?"

The others shook their heads.

"This, my friends, is the beginning of the end."

And it was!
